Eligibility and Nomination Procedures
KU faculty with at least a .5 FTE appointment, including tenure line faculty, instructional faculty, and unclassified academic staff, who have completed a minimum of four years of service in their faculty role are eligible for nomination. Nominees may not currently hold a unit-level or university-level administrative appointment (e.g., department chair, assistant / associate dean, research center director).
Please submit an electronic version of the nomination as a single PDF attachment via the submission link below.
The nomination file must be assembled as one (1) pdf document. Name the file as follows: YearFSA_LastnameFirstname (e.g., 2026FSA_HawkJay). No hard copies are accepted, unless the demonstration of teaching excellence is not capable of reduction to a digital document.
The pdf file should include the following and be presented in this order:
- Nomination letter (required). Nominations may be made by KU faculty members, staff members, or students. The nomination letter should help the review committee to see the unique contributions and ongoing dedication of the nominee to the KU community via department, school/college, and university-level service. Nomination letters should be no more than two pages, single-spaced.
- Nominee statement (required). The nominee’s statement should present and reflect on the faculty member’s institutional service activities and their impact. Nominee statements should be no more than two pages single-spaced.
- Nominee’s curriculum vitae (required). Department, school/college, and university level service should be clearly indicated on the CV..
- Chair/dean endorsement (if applicable). Unless the chair (or dean in schools without departments) has written the letter of nomination.
- Letters of support (optional). A maximum of three additional letters of support may be included. Letters of support may be written by KU faculty members, staff members, or students. Each letter of support should be no more than one page, single-spaced.
All nominees for the award must hold faculty rank (including tenure line faculty, instructional faculty, and unclassified academic staff) at .5 FTE or greater at the University of Kansas and have been in their faculty role for a minimum of four years.
The recipient’s service activities and impacts must stand out as making exceptional contributions to the University community via institutional service.
Examples of appropriate service include formal and informal activities of high quality in committee or task force work, campus-wide programming or initiatives, mentorship or professional development for colleagues, policy improvement, program creation, program evaluation, faculty governance, and support of student organizations. Achievement may be demonstrated through extraordinary excellence in a single service area or through excellence in a broader range of service activities.
The recipient’s service must have been performed as a faculty member; these awards are not for institutional service by administrators.
This award recognizes contributions to the KU community through institutional service at the department, school/college, and university levels, not to the broader profession, external professional organizations, or the local community.
The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs will convene a committee who will select, by majority vote, the most meritorious applications. The selection process will also consider distribution of the awards across disciplines over time.
