Annual Evaluation: Guidance for Self-Reflection
The purpose of self-assessment is to discuss your activities and accomplishments within each area of your professional role, including reflection on progress toward short- and long-term career goals.
As you engage in self-assessment, you may want to consider several factors:
- What are your biggest accomplishments in the last year?
- Did you meet the goals that you set for yourself in the last year?
- What resources were helpful to you in your work in the last year?
- What challenges did you face in your work in the last year?
- How does your work align with the mission, vision, and values of your unit and the University of Kansas?
The purpose of setting annual performance goals is to assist in planning and organizing work in ways that support your success and contribute to the success of the unit and KU. Ideally, these goals will inspire and motivate you, highlight your strengths and contributions, and help you to grow and develop in fulfilling ways.
As you reflect on your goals, you may want to consider several factors:
- What are the projects, ideas, and processes that you are hoping to focus on in the next year?
- What are your long-term professional goals (e.g., earning tenure or promotion, taking on a leadership role) and how do your goals for the next year align with these longer-term goals?
- How can your goals build on your existing strengths, resources, and accomplishments?
- How do your goals align with the mission, vision, and values of your unit and/or the University of Kansas?
- Are your goals realistic given your current workload and other responsibilities?
- Are your goals measurable? How will you know if you have met your goals?
- What resources would help you to achieve your goals?
